The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden’s priority during the next five to 10 years is to complete our vision for our model of radical accessibility. Our most prominent fundraising goal is the completion of the capital campaign for the Sculpture Garden and its construction, followed by the revisioning of the museum itself, with a building revitalization set to begin in the next seven years.
The revitalization of the Sculpture Garden, slated for completion in 2026, will increase visibility and access from the National Mall and reconnect the garden to the museum’s building via an original underground tunnel. Redefined spaces will provide the flexibility required for a 21st-century museum, including opportunities for performance art and temporary exhibitions of monumental sculptures.
The newly revitalized Sculpture Garden also will feature gallery space for exhibitions of commissioned works, which may include large-scale sculptures. The museum seeks to establish an endowment to fund these commissions, which would ensure the garden regularly features cutting-edge work that speaks to its location on the National Mall. The garden will further bolster the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden as a leader in the field.
